1. An Aerodynamic Design Modification in  a Train to Reduce Drag and Vibration by Introducing Polymeric Flexible Sheets Between Engine and Coach Through CFD Analysis.

Author: Ritabrata Das(UG 2016 batch), Supratim Saha(UG 2016 batch), Anirban Bose(Supervisor)

Abstract:

This is an aerodynamic study of air flow over a train. This research work identified a major source of vibration and energy loss associated with flow separation and vortex formation in the gap between the engine and coach next to it in a train. This problem is directly related to the efficiency of running the train in terms of fuel consumption, stability of the train and passenger comfort during motion. As a solution to the problem flexible polymeric sheets may be connected at the gap between engine and the coach. In this research work numerical simulations are carried out to investigate the flow separation and vortex formation between coaches. How the strength of the vortex changes with velocity of the train is also characterized.

Author: Shuvam Roy Chowdhury(UG 2016 batch), Ritabrata Das(UG 2016 batch), Supratim Saha(UG 2016 batch), Anirban Bose(Supervisor)

Abstract:

This is a small contribution in reducing the power consumption in different household commodities that we use everyday & many industrial applications. Force convective heat exchanger is a very important part of almost all the thermal systems that we use. Objective of this research work is to enhance the rate of heat transfer in heat exchangers without sacrificing pumping power. In this research work single phase numerical simulations are carried out to investigate the heat transfer and friction factor characteristics of developing & fully developed laminar flow of Ag-H2O nanofluid in a circular pipe. The base fluid is pure water and the volume fraction of nanoparticles in the base fluid in the range of 0.0625% to 1% has been studied. The applied Reynolds number range was 500 to 2100.The heat transfer coefficient of Ag-H2O nanofluid at different concentrations is found to be higher compared to water alone as working fluid. .The results are showing that the simulated data are in good agreement with the experimental ones available in the literature. New correlations are also proposed to calculate the average Nusselt number using multiple nonlinear regression analysis.

 3.  Analysis of Various Types of Blockage to Blood Flow in Artery Through CFD Using Finite Volume Method.

Author: Supratim Saha (UG 2016 batch), Anirban Bose(Supervisor)

Abstract:

Today we are more prone to coronary artery problems than before. Coronary artery disease is the narrowing or blockage of the coronary arteries, usually caused by atherosclerosis.. These plaques can restrict blood flow to the heart muscle by physically clogging the artery or by causing abnormal artery tone and function. Without an adequate blood supply, the heart becomes starved of oxygen and the vital nutrients it needs to work properly. This can cause chest pain called angina. If blood supply to a portion of the heart muscle is cut off entirely, or if the energy demands of the heart become much greater than its blood supply, a heart attack (injury to the heart muscle) may occur. The motivation of analyzing is to get an idea about the various loci which form on the artery walls and affect the blood flow .The objective of the research work is to compare the haemodynamics parameters with respect to different loci. Variation of pressure gradient with respect to percentage of blockage and width of the plaque will be analyzed.

Author: Meghna Das Chowdhury(UG 2017 batch), Anirban Bose(Supervisor)

Abstract:

The present numerical study investigates the capability of carbon nanofluid in enhancing the heat transfer characteristics under turbulent flow conditions. In this research work, numerical simulations using Ansys Fluent software (version 14.5) were carried out under turbulent flow and constant heat flux conditions to analyse the heat transfer characteristics of carbon nanofluid in a circular pipe of diameter 0.02m. The base fluid taken was water and the volume fractions of carbon nanotubes (CNT) taken were 0.03, 0.04, and 0.05. The enhancement of Nusselt number at different volume concentrations was observed when carbon nanofluid as compared to water was taken as the working fluid. With the presence of carbon nanotubes (CNT) at volume concentrations of 0.03, 0.04 and 0.05 the Nusselt number enhanced by 23.3-25.4%, 26.8-31%, 30.2-36.6% respectively as compared to water. The result obtained by us was used to formulate a new correlation to calculate the average Nusselt number.

Author: Abhisekh Dey(UG 2017 batch), Prithwiraj Chatterjee (UG 2017 batch), Shubham Giri (UG 2018 batch), Anirban Bose (Supervisor)

Abstract:

In search of a solution to the problem of conventional water heating systems, which consumes a lot of electrical energy and hence costly, we work on a hybrid solar water heating system (HSWHS). In this research work we have studied the performance of the solar collector in terms of outlet temperature of it at different operating conditions by changing the flow rate to get the optimum design parameter by numerical simulation. It has been observed that carbon nanotube (CNT)-water nanofluid augmented the heat transfer and performance of the solar collector is improved in comparison to plain water.

6.  A Finite Element Analysis Showing The Performance Enhancement of Spur Gear by Al-SiC Composite.

Author: Sarmistha Kundu (UG 2017 batch), Arnab Banerjee(UG 2017 batch), Goutam Laha (Supervisor), Anirban Bose (Supervisor)

Abstract:

Spur gears are widely used in power transmission due to its simplicity. Nowadays we have to operate machines at different loads and speeds. Gear fails because of many reasons like weak material properties, manufacturing defects, poor design, improper maintenance. By selecting suitable material it is possible to make a compact and long lasting gearbox. In this research work we have studied the performance of Al-SiC composite in terms of its frictional stress at varying percentages of SiC. We have done this analysis by numerical simulation in ANSYS 16.0 by finite element method. We have optimized the SiC percentage by considering the frictional stress which is proportional to the wear rate of the gear material and weight reduction of the gear.

Abstract:

The issue of safety is very important in any place, especially when it involves human life directly such as public transports. In view of the existing problem of safe entering and leaving of the railway coach we designed a mechanical arrangement of stair case system in every coach (present design is for AC 3 tier coach only) which will be controlled by a guard and also there will be provision for controlling each unit from respective coaches in emergency. There will be a feedback control system to activate indicator alarm and time delay to avoid any accident during coming out and folding back of the staircase system even after it was activated by the guard. Our project can meet all the solutions related to the passenger safety during entraining or detraining.

8.  Aerodynamic Design of Longitudinal Head Shape of High Speed Train by CFD Analysis

Author: Meghna Das Chowdhury(UG 2017 Batch), Shubham Giri (UG 2018 Batch), Anirban Bose(Supervisor)

Abstract:

The longitudinal head shape of high speed trains significantly affects its aerodynamic performance. With increasing speed the aerodynamic drag on the train increases rapidly. Minimizing this drag force has been the objective of many researches in the past. With the development of computational fluid dynamics (CFD) in the engineering field, it has been successfully applied to the design process of high speed trains. In this article of ours we have demonstrated with the help of CFD the effect of the longitudinal head shape of the train head on its aerodynamic performance. Different profile head shapes have been developed and each of their performances have been individually analyzed using the ANSYS FLUENT 14.5 version software. The results show that different head profile curves cause different surface pressure distributions of the body and different airflow velocities of the outer flow field. We have found out that with the increased streamlining of the profile head the form drag coefficient significantly reduces.

 9. A CFD Analysis Showing Performance Enhancement of Journal Bearing by Using Al2O3-SAE30 Nanolubricant

Author: Shubham Giri (UG 2018 Batch) and Anirban Bose (Supervisor)

Abstract:

In many industrial applications journal bearing is an obvious choice in supporting high speed and heavily loaded shaft. Performance of the journal bearing depends a lot on its lubrication system. One of the major concerns in the bearing design is to keep the temperature of the oil film low to avoid fatigue of the inner liner material of the bearing. High temperature of the oil film also reduces the load carrying capacity. In this research work a numerical analysis has been done by using Al2O3-SAE30 nanolubricant in comparison to SAE30 as bearing lubricant. Analysis has been done over a range of speed from 1000rpm to 3000rpm. A thermo- hydrodynamic 2-D analysis is done by solving continuity, momentum and energy equation through control volume method using FLUENT 14.5 software package. It has been found that performance of the journal bearing in terms of load carrying capacity and rate of heat transfer through the oil film has been improved.

10. THERMO-HYDRAULIC PERFORMANCE ANALYSIS OF PLAIN RECTANGULAR PLATE FIN HEAT EXCHANGERS IN LAMINAR REGION -A NUMERICAL STUDY

Author: Chandra Shekhar(UG 2019), Md. Adnan(UG 2019),Anirban Bose(Supervisor)

 Abstract:

Recent advancement in the chemical process plants, power industries, cryogenic applications, aerospace applications and electronics technology require efficient and economic design of compact heat exchangers. This is always a challenge to design a compact heat exchanger because of its complex structure. Plate Fin Heat Exchanger (PTFE) is a very common compact heat exchanger used in industries. But in many cases they are not well designed from the point of view of heat transfer characteristics and pumping power requirement. In this research work an extensive numerical study of the rectangular plate fin heat exchanger is done to evaluate heat transfer characteristic j factor and heat exchanger core pressure drop characteristic Fanning friction factor f as function of heat exchanger geometry and Reynold’s number. Colburn j factor and friction factor are the primary parameters required to find the effectiveness and pumping power requirement of the PTFE.

11. THERMO-HYDRAULIC PERFORMANCE ANALYSIS OF CNT-H2O NANOFLUID FLOW IN TURBULENT REGION THROUGH RECTANGULAR PLATE FIN HEAT EXCHANGERS -A NUMERICAL STUDY

Author: Anupal Banerjee (UG 2019), Utpal Maji(UG 2019), Anirban Bose(Supervisor)

Abstract:

The heat transfer performance of a system can be improved using a combination of passive methods, namely nanofluids and various types of fin geometries. These methods can enhance the heat transfer coefficient and consequently reduce the weight of the system. In this paper, the effect of fin geometry and nanofluids in Plate Fin Heat Exchangers (PFHE) are studied by numerical analysis. The forced convective heat transfer performance is evaluated in terms of Nanofluid Thermal Performance Number (, Nusselt number and Colburn j factor. Pressure drop characteristics are estimated in terms of Fanning friction factor ‘f’ of the CNT-H2O nanofluid in the turbulent zone of Reynolds number in the range 3000 to 7500. Thermo-hydraulic performance variations with rectangular fin geometry and volume fraction 3% to 5% of the nanoparticles in nanofluid is analyzed. Performance of the nanofluids are also compared with the performance of pure water. It has been observed that heat transfer enhancement using nanofluid is more than 20%. A correlation of Fanning friction factor ‘f’ and Colburn j factor with geometry of fin, Reynolds number and volume fraction of nanofluid is developed. This correlation is the heart of the rating and design of PFHEs.

Abstract. Cryogenic applications are increasing in recent times with the advancement of technology. This research work is focused to improve performance of cryogenic fluid in compact heat exchangers. Nanoparticles with high thermal conductivity is mixed with the cryogenic fluid to improve the thermo-hydraulic performance of heat transfer fluid used in compact heat exchangers. Liquid He has been used as base fluid and its performance has been compared using nanoparticles CuO, Al2O3, Fe3O4 and Single Wall Carbon Nanotube (SWCNT). A numerical analysis has been done in the laminar range of flows in a PFHE. Comparison of the nanofluids at cryogenic temperature is compared with heat transfer performance parameter Colburn j-factor and pressure drop performance parameter Fanning’s friction factor(f). It has been found that around 15-30% enhancement of thermal performance is achieved with nanoparticles in comparison to liquid He without any nanoparticles. It has also been observed that there is an improvement of  factors representing heat transfer enhancement without much increasing pumping pressure.

14. Implementation of Obstacle Avoidance-An Aspect of Automated Load Carrier for Industry 4.0 Plant

Author: Harshvardhan Singh (UG 2022), Gaurav Kumar Rai (UG 2022) & Anirban Bose (Supervisor)

Abstract:In modern day, it is of utmost importance to develop and build autonomous vehicles. Robotics offers a dependable and cost-effective solution supporting fast changing agile manufacturing. Their intelligent and fully autonomous, mixed fleet of AGVs reliably move materials between production cells, whether on the plant floor or warehouse. These processes are executed safely and with great precision including 24/7 IIoT monitoring. The roadmap to such autonomous vehicles, begins right from the development of an obstacle avoiding robot. Proximity sensors are used to sense obstacle distances without any physical contact. In our project, we have used an Ultrasonic Distance Sensor (HC SR04) to serve this purpose. The position of this sensor is controlled by a micro-servo motor. Arduino Uno R3 has been used as a microcontroller which serves as the brain of the entire circuit. According to the data received by the microcontroller from the sensor, a decision is taken accordingly, as programmed. After this, the motor driver receives signal and controls the motion of the DC gear motors. This is how the motion of this robot is controlled.

Abstract:Automated Guided Vehicles or Automated Load Carriers are portable robots that self-navigate to move materials around warehouses or other manufacturing facilities. They shorten logistics times and ensure safety for an otherwise risky process. This paper presents the development of a Line Following Robot. In this project, Arduino Uno R3 is used as an open-source, single microcontroller board based on the Microchip ATmega328P microcontroller which is chosen as the main controller to react towards the data received from IR sensors to give fast, smooth, accurate and safe movement of the robot tracking the line. Adafruit Motor Shield mounted on an Arduino Uno R3 has been used, which consists of two L293D Motor Driver ICs connected internally by 74HC595 Shift Register. The experimental results show that the robot is working with high precision and speed, enabling it to perform under real-time requirements and can be used for any specific application after required modifications.

Author: Kailash Roy(UG 2021), Sayan Pramanik(UG 2021), Sayar Rakshit(UG 2021), Anirban Bose(Supervisor)

Abstract: Heat exchangers are one the most extensively employed equipment in many industries. The fields of its applications range from petrochemicals, aviation, power plants, petroleum, cryogenic applications and many more. Designing and optimizing a heat exchanger is quite a challenging and complex process. In order to enhance the heat transfer performance of the PFHEs, optimization is required. In this paper, thermo-hydraulic performance of triangular plate fin heat exchanger with varying fin height and fin spacing and flow parameters is predicted using machine learning models like Linear Regression, XGBoost, Random Forest, Decision Tree and ANN models to make an optimized design. Here the working fluid is air and the Reynolds Number is varying for both laminar and turbulent flow regions. The results shown by the Linear Regression found to be best prediction in heat exchanger performance parameters for both f-factor and j -factor and ANN model was also studied and found very low Sum of Square Error (SSE) in both training and validation.

Abstract: At this time, energy conservation and pollution management are two of the most essential topics of engineering study. Compact Heat Exchanger designs with optimum settings can handle both of these issues. However, optimizing the design of a PFHE (Plate Fin Heat Exchanger) is still difficult and time-consuming. In this paper, performance prediction of a rectangular perforated plate fin heat exchanger with varying fin spacing, perforated diameter and fin height and flow parameters is done by Linear Regression, XGBoost, Random Forest, Decision Tree and ANN models to facilitate the design optimization of PFHE. Here the working fluid is air and Reynolds Number has been varied in both laminar and turbulent flow regions. It has been found that the XGBoost & ANN accuracies are the best in predicting the thermo-hydraulic parameters f-factor and j -factor of the perforated rectangular PFHE.

19. Prediction of Thermal Comfort and Performance Comparison of Various Machine Learning Models

Author: Harshvardhan Singh(UG 2022), Gaurav Kumar Rai(UG 2022), Anirban Bose(Supervisor)

Abstract:With new technologies and new requirements, new challenges are being faced by the Heat Ventilation and Air Conditioning (HVAC) companies. Reduction of power consumption by the HVAC appliances is the need of the hour. At the same time, there must not be any compromise with the thermal comfort. This thermal comfort is a person specific attribute, and thus, varies from person to person even in the same environment. Also, thermal comfort is significantly a complicated thing to predict, because of its dependence on several factors. Nevertheless, as it is the ultimate target of the HVAC sector, making of a machine learning based thermal comfort predictive model would be of paramount significance to these industries. Keeping this in mind, ASHRAE Global Thermal Comfort Database II, having around 107583 rows and 70 columns (features), was used in this study to make and train thermal comfort predictive models using six different machine learning algorithms, namely, Decision Tree, Random Forest, XG Boost, K Nearest Neighbor, Bagging and Gaussian Naive Bayes. After this, their performance was measured and the model with the best performance was identified and selected for web deployment. This paper describes the entire work from the very beginning, that is, data analysis and cleaning, to the model deployment.
